Explore the Future of Healthcare Learning at Western's Simulation and XR Labs
Western’s Simulation Lab and Extended Reality (XR) Lab is revolutionizing healthcare education by blending cutting-edge technology with hands-on experience. Located in the Kumm Center Building, our lab offers students in Health and Public Safety programs immersive learning opportunities through high-fidelity simulations and the latest in extended reality (XR) technology.
Programs Utilizing Our Sim Labs:
- Nursing
- EMS (Emergency Medical Services)
- Respiratory Therapy
- Dental Assistant
- Surgical Technology (Coming Soon)
What Happens in Our Simulation and XR Lab?
Our lab features High-Fidelity, Mixed Reality, Virtual Reality and Standardized Patient Simulations. These advanced tools allow students to experience real-world scenarios in a safe, controlled environment, preparing them for the demands of healthcare practice.
- Nursing students practice patient assessment and complex condition management using lifelike manikins.
- EMS students train for emergency response through scenarios that mimic the intensity of real-life medical crises.
- Respiratory Therapy students refine critical life-saving techniques, managing respiratory emergencies in high-stakes simulations.
- Dental Assistant students interact with standardized patients to learn critical patient care techniques during medical emergencies.
- Surgical Technology students (coming soon) will practice operating room protocols, including sterile techniques and instrument handling.
Discover the Power of Extended Reality (XR)
The future of healthcare education lies in XR technologies, and Western is leading the way. Our XR Lab offers students the chance to engage in Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR) environments. These immersive tools bring learning to life in ways traditional classrooms cannot match.
- Acadicus VR Platform: Practice clinical procedures, experience medical scenarios, and improve decision-making skills in an interactive virtual space.
- Victoria, the Mixed Reality Birthing Simulator: Experience lifelike birthing simulations that allow students to visualize internal anatomy and fetal movements, preparing them for the demands of labor and delivery.
Community Outreach and Collaboration
Western’s XR Lab is also a valuable resource for local EMS services, including Arcadia Ambulance Service, Westby EMS, Viroqua First Responders, and LaFarge EMS, providing cutting-edge simulation education to improve emergency response and patient care in our community.
